Top Gun Basketball Academy was formed in 2009 by Coach Brian Hershman. Coach Hershman’s vision for Top Gun Basketball, was to bring coaching from the college to youth level, so that younger athletes would have an advantage over the competition at an early stage. Coach Hershman implemented this vision with a couple of local competitive club teams and a consistent Sunday night skills Clinic at Miramar College.
As the company’s vision for itself evolved, Top Gun Basketball looked towards shaping the national reputation of San Diego basketball through the creation of top level basketball leagues. These leagues started off with 30 teams, eventually evolving into the biggest boys league, not only in San Diego, but across the country with 225 teams.
The Top Gun Program has been highly influential in developing some of the top players who have ever come out of the San Diego Area. Including McDonald’s All-American, Jaylen Hands and Reed Farley. Hands will be the starting Point Guard at UCLA in the Fall of 2017 and Farley will be the starting Shooting Guard at Harvard for the same season. Using the same developmental principles, plenty of other notable prospects have since come through the pipeline and will continue to build on the foundation Coach Hershman & Top Gun Basketball have helped lay out for San Diego Basketball.
One of the developmental principles established in 2009 by Top Gun Basketball is their Summer Camp, which introduces the youth to the fundamentals of the game. The summer camps have developed over 3,000 campers. Top Gun expects to coach over 700 campers this year who are looking to improve their skills the Top Gun way. Our directors include: DJ Gay (SDSU Hall of Fame PG) – Dwayne Cosby (SD Christian College Coach) and Nick Levine (Head Bishops Coach) as well as many former TG players counseling the campers.
The last implementation of Top Gun’s product offering were tournaments, leading Top Gun to launch SDI – San Diego Summer Invitational 6 years ago.Top Gun now hosts 4-5 large tournaments per year that have on average, 120 teams from all over Western, and Southwestern, United States. Top Gun’s Tournaments are attended on average by 5,000 people over the span of each weekend.
Each event that Top Gun Basketball Academy has created has contributed to Coach Brian Hershman’s ultimate vision – creating a culture in San Diego that develops world class basketball players. The next step to obtain this goal would be to create a centralized facility where players can train and compete at the Top Gun level.
